Three Generations, One Moment — Why These Photos Matter More Than You Think”

There’s something quietly powerful about having three generations of women in one frame.

Not posed perfectly.
Not overthought.
Just… together.

This session came about because Michelle wanted photos with her mum and her daughter before her mum returned home after a 6 week visit.
No big occasion.
No milestone.
Just a feeling of “we should do this while we can.”

And honestly… those are often the moments that matter the most.

Because life doesn’t stay still for long.

Children grow up and leave home.
Parents get older.
Families shift, stretch, and change shape in ways we don’t always notice until we look back.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, we realise we don’t have many photos where everyone is simply together.

What I loved about this session wasn’t just the three of them standing side by side.

It was:

  • the quiet pride

  • the shared features

  • the little glances and smiles

  • the sense of history sitting right there in front of me

Three different stages of life… all connected.

I get asked from time to time if I photograph families.

And the answer is yes…
but not in the traditional sense.

The sessions I’m most drawn to are like this.

Less about perfectly behaved kids and matching outfits…
and more about connection.

About capturing the women who raised you,
and the woman you’ve become,
all in the same frame.

If your family is in a season of change…

Maybe someone is visiting from overseas.
Maybe your children are about to head off into their own lives.
Or maybe it’s just been a while since you’ve all been together.

It might be worth pausing for a moment.

Not for a big production.
Just for something real.

Because one day, these photos won’t just be “nice to have.”

They’ll be the ones you’re most grateful you took.

If this feels like something your family has been thinking about, you’re always welcome to reach out for a chat.
No pressure—just a conversation.
