I'm Not Photogenic.- I'll Just Stay Here Behind the Camera

I’ve heard that so many times over the years.

And when it comes to family photos, quite often it’s Mum saying it.

“I’ll just take the photo.”

“You get one with the kids.”

“I hate having my photo taken.”

“I’m not photogenic anyway.”

And before you know it, Mum has managed to organise everyone, get everyone dressed, make sure everyone turns up — and then somehow she’s barely in any of the photos.

Sound familiar?

But here’s the thing…

There really isn’t a special group of people who are naturally “photogenic”, you don’t have to avoid cameras for the rest of your life.

We’ve all seen photographs of ourselves we don’t like. I know I certainly have.

But a photograph can be affected by so many things — the light, the angle, the timing and, probably most importantly, how comfortable you were when it was taken.

If you’re already thinking, I hate photos of myself, chances are the minute a camera appears you tense up and suddenly have absolutely no idea what to do with yourself.

That’s where I come in.

You don't need to know what to do.

During a family session, I’m not expecting you to arrive knowing how to stand, where to put your hands or how to look naturally relaxed while someone points a camera at you.

That’s my job.

I’ll chat away to you all, probably ask a few questions and get everyone talking and laughing. It’s one of the easiest ways to help you forget about the camera, relax and settle into the session.

Along the way, I’ll give you a little direction when you need it, find the light that works for you and make sure nobody is left wondering, “What am I supposed to do now?”

Because the photos I want to create aren’t about everyone looking perfect.

They’re about you and your family as you are right now.

And Mum — that includes you.

Please get in the photo.

One day, your children aren’t going to look back at these photographs and notice the things you were worrying about.

They’re going to see their mum.

They’ll see the way you looked at them. The way you laughed. The way you held them close.

They’ll see the woman who was there through this chapter of their lives.

So if “I’m not photogenic” has been your reason for staying behind the camera, perhaps it’s time to stop worrying about being photogenic.

You don't have to love having your photo taken to have photographs you love.

You just need to be there.

Because you belong in your family photographs too. ❤️
