How to choose outfits for your Branding session (without overthinking it)
One of the biggest questions I get before a branding session is:
“What on earth do I wear?”
Here’s the good news—you don’t have to reinvent your wardrobe or dress like someone you’re not. Your branding photos should feel like you, just polished and confident. Here are my go-to tips to help you plan outfits that work beautifully on camera.
1. Solid Colours Are Your Best Friend
Solid colours tend to photograph really well. They’re timeless, flattering, and let you be the focus, not your clothes.
If patterns are part of your style, that’s fine too! A patterned top with plain bottoms (or vice versa) is a great way to keep things balanced without it feeling “too busy.”
2. Plan for Both Professional and Casual Looks
Your branding photos should show the range of who you are—especially if you use them across your website, social media, and other platforms.
Think about including one look that’s polished and professional (like a blazer or a well-cut blouse) and one that’s more relaxed and approachable (like a favourite knit, a casual jacket, or something that just feels like you).
3. Be Thoughtful with Colours
Wear colours you genuinely love—ones that feel good on you and reflect your personality.
Avoid super-bright fluorescents (think traffic-warden yellow or neon green), especially near your face. These colours can reflect light back onto your skin, which isn’t the most flattering and can be tricky to edit.
4. Say No to Tiny Stripes
Here’s the only real “rule”:
Super fine stripes can cause a strobing effect on screen.
This is a kind of flickering or wobbling pattern that can be distracting.
So, if you love stripes, go for bolder or wider ones instead.
5. Get Creative with Colour (or Keep It Classic)
If your brand colours are bold—go bold!
If you love neutral tones or always wear black, embrace that too. The key is to feel authentic.
Your audience wants to connect with the real you, not someone dressed like a Pinterest board they wouldn’t recognise in real life.
6. Keep Changes Simple
If you’re planning a few outfit changes, keep them stress-free.
A quick switch of a top, adding a jacket or cardigan, or swapping accessories can completely change your look—without the hassle of a full outfit change (especially if there’s no private changing area).
Bonus tip: Choose tops that are easy to get over your head without messing up your hair and makeup.
7. Prep Ahead of Time
A week before your shoot, lay out all your outfits on your bed. This way, you can see how they look together and you’ll have time to add or swap pieces if needed.
Pro tip: Snap a quick phone photo and send it to me—I’m always happy to give feedback if you’re unsure.
The Key? Be Organised = Be Relaxed
The more you prep your outfits ahead of time, the more relaxed and confident you’ll feel on the day. And that confidence will shine through in your photos.
